The Town of Forestburgh Dog Control Officer, Mr. Steven Budofsky, may be contacted at 845-480-9414 to assist you if your dog is lost or if you observe a stray dog in the town. If you pick up a stray dog you may contact the following shelters to see if they can assist you in placing the dog based on availability of space- Catskill Animal Rescue 845-747-9450, Sullivan County SPCA 845-796-3120. If you pick up a dog you may hold it for up to 10 days to see if the owner is found but you MUST report to the Dog Control Officer that the dog is in your possession, and you are required by law to provide all pertinent information. As the DCO hours are part-time, you may contact the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department at 845-794-7100 if it’s an emergency. The Sheriff’s Department also handles reports of neglect and abuse. As per NYS law, all dogs must have current rabies vaccination certificate and license. Both rabies and license tags are required to be affixed to the dog’s collar or harness at all times. It’s also a good idea to have your contact information embroidered on your dog’s collar, an ID tag and a microchip with current information so the DCO can get your dog back to you as quickly and safely as possible. NYS law also requires that dogs MUST be in complete control of the owner at all times when off the owner’s property and no dog shall be permitted to run loose, harass or threaten any person or other animal or cause property damage. Penalties are in place for any violation. Whether you are a resident or a visitor, please be considerate and responsible dog owner. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!
